The addition of chicory to coffee is a long-standing tradition that dates all the way back to the American Colonial Era. However, it wasn’t until the American Civil War that the practice became widespread. After Union Navy blockades effectively severed trade to the ports and market of New Orleans, locals searched for ways to prolong their supply of coffee while still maintaining its taste. Chicory was hailed as the perfect substitute. Now, over a century later, the practice of drinking coffee with chicory remains a strong New Orleans tradition.
